Supporting our Coaches and Skaters

Program Assistants

Program Assistants play an important role in the success of our CanSkate and Pre-CanSkate sessions. They work alongside Skate Canada–certified coaches to help create a positive, fun and safe learning environment for young skaters.
These volunteers are dedicated, experienced skaters who share their skills, energy and enthusiasm with our newest members.

What Program Assistants Do

Program Assistants help our coaches deliver high-quality sessions by:

  • Demonstrating skills and teaching progressions
  • Assisting with warm-ups and cool-downs
  • Helping skaters move through circuits
  • Encouraging correct technique and reinforcing skills
  • Supervising practice time and keeping skaters engaged
  • Providing individual and group assistance
  • Acting as role models on and off the ice

Who They Are

Program Assistants are accomplished GSC skaters who volunteer their time to support our Learn to Skate programs. They receive training each season on:

  • Working safely with young skaters
  • Skate Canada program delivery
  • Communication and leadership
  • Session structure and teaching expectations

Why Program Assistants Matter

Program Assistants help our coaches keep sessions running smoothly and efficiently, especially when working with large or diverse groups of skaters. Their presence allows for:

  • More hands-on assistance
  • More demonstrations
  • Faster circuit transitions
  • Better supervision
  • A fun learning environment

They help make the CanSkate experience positive for every child who steps on the ice.

Program Assistant FAQ

Yes. All Program Assistants take part in Skate Canada–approved training at the start of each season. They also receive ongoing guidance from coaches throughout the year so they understand session structure, safety expectations and effective ways to support young skaters.

Program Assistants are not responsible for evaluating skaters and cannot provide progress updates. They can help you connect with a Skate Canada coach or pass along a message, but any questions about your child’s development should go directly to a coach.

Program Assistants are volunteers. Many are StarSkate athletes who love giving back to the club and helping our younger skaters grow. Their contribution helps ensure smooth, safe and fun sessions.

Yes. Skaters in high school can earn volunteer hours for their time as Program Assistants. The club can confirm hours upon request.

Most Program Assistants are STARSkate skaters who have reached a level where they can safely demonstrate skills and support younger skaters. If an athlete is interested in becoming a Program Assistant, they can speak with a coach for guidance.

Interested skaters can connect with a GSC coach or email the club. Training information and expectations are provided each season.
