CanSkate Excellence Exceeded Standard

We are pleased to share that our CanSkate program has been recognized by Skate Ontario at the CanSkate Excellence Exceeded Standard level. This reflects our strong coaching, well structured sessions and a welcoming environment for new skaters.

Who Can Join?

A fun introduction to skating

This group is perfect for young skaters who are stepping on the ice for the first time. They should be able to stand on their own or have completed PreCanSkate. Sessions focus on building confidence and comfort on the ice with lots of movement and encouragement.

If your child is not yet able to stand independently, please see our PreCanSkate page.

The right starting point for all new skaters aged six and older

All skaters age six or older begin in CanSkate. This applies even if they have never skated before. Coaches help them settle in quickly and start developing strong foundational skills.

For returning skaters ready to continue earning badges

If your child has taken skating lessons before or has completed some CanSkate stages, we will place them in a level that matches their skills. The badge system allows each skater to progress at their own pace.

How the Badge System Works

CanSkate includes six stages that guide a skater from the basics to more advanced skills. Each stage has ribbons and a badge. Skaters earn these as they demonstrate the required skills.

What to Expect During a Session?

Every session is led by an NCCP certified Skate Canada coach with help from trained Program Assistants. Skaters stay active and engaged throughout the lesson.

  • Group warm up
  • Rotations through skill stations
  • Balance, Control, and Agility activities
  • A Fast Track lane for practicing forward movement
  • Encouragement, feedback, and ongoing assessment
  • Group cool down

Need to Know

Helmet Requirement

All skaters in CanSkate must wear a CSA approved hockey helmet. A coach may discuss removing the helmet later in the program once the skater shows consistent control and readiness.

Skates and Clothing

Skaters should wear properly fitted hockey or figure skates, gloves or mittens, and warm clothing that allows easy movement.

Arriving for Class

Arrive a few minutes early so your skater can get ready and feel relaxed before stepping onto the ice.

Club Policies for CANSkate

We understand that families are busy and that things come up. If your child misses a class, they continue with their group at the next scheduled session. Make up classes are not available at this time.

Skaters attend the session they registered for. This helps coaches keep groups stable and maintain a smooth learning environment.

Coaches and Program Assistants are happy to answer questions about your child’s progress. Please speak with them at an appropriate time before or after class, or contact the club office by email.
