Your Journey in STARSkate
Transitioning from CanSkate
Pre-STAR is the first step into the STARSkate program.
Built on the strong foundation of CanSkate, this level introduces skaters to the four disciplines of figure skating: Skills, FreeSkate, Ice Dance, and Artistic.
In small group and early private lessons with NCCP-certified Skate Canada coaches, skaters develop edge quality, basic spins, and simple jumps while learning how to train independently and set personal goals.
Why it matters
Pre-STAR bridges the gap between learn-to-skate and learn-to-train. It’s a supportive and fun environment where young skaters begin to find their style on the ice.

Skill Building and Testing
STAR 1–3 begins Skate Canada’s “learn to figure skate” pathway, part of the Learn-to-Train stage.
Skaters are introduced to formal STAR assessments in Skills, FreeSkate, Dance, and Artistic, all coach-assessed right at the club.
At this level, skaters refine forward and backward edges, perform single jumps and upright spins, and start developing rhythm and musicality in short programs.
Why it matters
STAR 1–3 builds confidence and independence while giving skaters their first official recognition through Skate Canada assessments.

Advanced Skills and Competition Pathway
The STAR 4–5 levels continue the STAR 1–5 framework where assessments remain coach-assessed to support ongoing development.
Training expands to include jump combinations, spin variations, step sequences, and stronger performance components.
Many skaters start taking part in STAR 4–5 competitions or exhibitions, experiencing the excitement of performing under pressure in a supportive club setting.
Why it matters
STAR 4–5 helps skaters focus on personal bests and performance quality. It’s where confidence, consistency, and presentation start coming together.

Performance and Excellence
STAR 6–Gold is Skate Canada’s advanced assessment and event framework for skaters who have completed the STAR 1–5 curriculum.
At this stage, assessments may be evaluator-assessed, giving skaters the opportunity to earn official Skate Canada recognition at higher levels.
Training emphasizes artistry, power, interpretation, and mastery of complex elements. It prepares skaters for competitive, synchronized, or coaching pathways depending on their goals.
Why it matters
STAR 6–Gold represents dedication and excellence. Skaters bring together all they’ve learned to perform with confidence and artistry.
